The Conference theme for ANCOLD 2011 is The Future of Dams.
Over the last decade the role of dams has gradually shifted from the traditional source of new water supply for urban and rural communities and industries to now being one of many options. Desalination, greater reuse and Managed Aquifer Recharge are examples of alternate water supplies. If this trend continues what will be the future expectations of dams and what will be their role for growing communities? Will decommissioning or retrofitting dams for alternate uses become more common? Will there be new customers, for example environmental organisations purchasing water held in dams.
In this climate we will also need to consider how much we invest in dams infrastructure. In this context, the use of the ALARP principle in dam safety upgrade decisions is of particular importance. When is the ALARP principle satisfied and investment best utilised elsewhere in our community? The 2011 ANCOLD conference will provide the opportunity for the participants to discuss these future trends in the management of dams.
