IPENZ Transportation Group

The Transportation Group is a Technical Interest Group of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) with a membership of approximately 1,000.

Membership of the Group is open to those with a membership of IPENZ and this IPENZ Technical Group also opens its membership to other individuals with a professional interest or directly involved in the science, practice and technical aspects of the teaching, planning, design, implementation and management of transportation systems and facilities. 

Within the IPENZ goals and ethics, the purpose and membership of the group are:

• To advance technical knowledge, integrated planning, safety, traffic and asset management of existing and proposed transportation facilities, networks and systems for the movement of people and goods by all modes of travel.
• The membership is drawn from the full spectrum of all those who provide services in planning, design, development management and the many facets of traffic management for all modes of transport.  The Group supports specialist interest areas such as traffic management, traffic engineering, highway engineering, land based transportation planning, safety, asset management, energy and other areas of specialist knowledge.

The vision of the Group is:
“The Transportation Group is recognised as the foremost impartial and credible voice on transportation issues in New Zealand.  Its perspectives are invariably sought when new policies and legislation are being developed.  It makes a significant contribution to the major transportation debates of the day, often taking the lead in raising issues for consideration.”

The Group produces a regular newsletter (Roundabout) and is managed by a National Committee.
There are three technical subgroups available for those members with a specialist interest in the area:

• Signals NZ User Group (SNUG) ,
• the Trips Database Bureau (TDB) ,
• and the NZ Modelling Users Group (NZMUGS) .
