Siemens has been providing solutions to New Zealand industry since it first supplied and installed a Timeball system at Point Lyttelton near Christchurch in 1876. The Siemens name in New Zealand is now synonymous with power generation. The company has established its reputation through successfully completing major projects including: the supply of generators to Manapouri Power Station; a new hydro generator and excitation system at Mangahao Power Station; and 220 kV circuit breakers to Huntly Power Station switchyard. More recently it has secured the contract to build Contact Energy's Otahuhu Power Station.

Siemens (NZ) Limited working closely with Siemens Ltd, Australia are part of a large multinational, Siemens AG in Germany. Siemens (NZ) Limited is able to draw on the resources of its parent company providing local customers with access to a global network of over 386,000 people, in 190 countries. It has the ability to offer turnkey solutions tailored to its customers' needs and the capacity to undertake diverse projects such as combined cycle gas turbine plant, turnkey substations, total systems capability for the rail industry, as well as automation and control packages.

It is a major supplier to Trans Power New Zealand for 66 kV, 110 kV and 220 kV circuit breakers plus numerous power transformers, bushings and insulators.

Siemens (NZ) Limited is actively involved in the transmission network in New Zealand. Alan Hayson heads the Power Transmission & Distribution division offering systems and products that make power transmission and distribution safer, more reliable and efficient. This area includes:

• HV AIS & GIS substations and switchyards

• HV & MV switchgear, products and panels

• Substation automation

• Power systems control

• Protection relays, complete protection schemes

• Systems planning and network analysers, event recorders,

• Power network telecommunications

• Voltage regulators

Siemens is a world leader in power generation. Siemens (NZ) Limited has supplied a number of steam turbine generator sets to BOP Fertiliser Works, Waipa Sawmill, Methanex Methanol Plant, and recently Kiwi Co-op Dairies Ltd due for commissioning towards the end of the year. Chris Fallows, recently appointed Key Account Manager for Power Generation, has responsibility for the following areas; utility scale power plants; industrial steam turbines; maintenance overhaul and refurbishment.

Currently Siemens (NZ) Limited as main EPC contractor is building a 400 MW combine cycle power station in Auckland for Contact Energy. Siemens will also supply the gas turbine, the steam turbine, the generator and the generator transformer, and the instrumentation and control equipment. This has been a major milestone for the company, bringing to fruition the largest single-shaft combined cycle power plant in the world today. When the project is completed it will be Siemens' first turnkey power plant in New Zealand.

Siemens (NZ) Limited is also active in the areas of industry, components, telecommunications and energy and transportation. It is a major supplier and partner to Telecom NZ for ATM broadband equipment.
