Cement Your Ideas in Concrete

This month the Cement & Concrete Association of New Zealand (C&CA), supported jointly by Milburn and Golden Bay, launches a free information and support programme for residential home designers. Called Cement Your Ideas in Concrete the programme has two main goals _ to make concrete home design and construction easier for participating home designers, and to provide these designers with the opportunity to take commercial advantage of growth in consumer demand for this medium. The programme primarily targets architectural designers, however, engineers will be directly affected and stand to gain significantly from the programme.

"Firstly we're looking to make concrete homes a whole lot easier for architectural designers," explains Grant Thomas, Marketing Manager at C&CA.

"We've got research that indicates there are a number of perceived barriers, myths and misconceptions out there about concrete homes that need to be addressed. One of the perceived barriers is the need to involve an engineer in the design process. It's important that architects don't view engineering design as a costly hassle.

"Although it is possible for an architect to design concrete masonry homes using NZS 4229, more often than not a professional engineering design will be required. However, with many larger homes an engineering design will also be required for light timber frame construction and therefore designing in concrete does not necessarily involve additional cost. It is important to consider the total design and construction cost, not just individual elements in isolation".

"We want to hear from engineers and contractors experienced in residential concrete construction systems as these are the people who can help provide a cost competitive concrete home. Access to our database of `residential concrete champions' is an important part of our service to designers. We're also aware that there's a job to do in shifting designer and client thinking from light timber frame to concrete. But in real terms, the issues are primarily matters of client education and designer familiarity. These are both areas that Cement Your Ideas in Concrete tackles head-on.

"Secondly, the programme is about enabling participating design practices to take commercial advantage of what we see as an accelerating growth in consumer demand for concrete homes. Concrete homes work, and new construction systems offer a comparable cost solution to light timber frame systems.

"The success of design practices that have already established concrete homes as a competency testifies to the commercial opportunities this product creates," says Grant. But while C&CA envisages significant commercial benefit for participating architectural practices, they also believe the programme will benefit a wide range of players in the construction and materials supply industries, including those involved in the engineering design.

Increasing demand

Grant argues that consumer demand for concrete homes is already on the climb. "As it stands, interest in concrete home construction is on the increase. But consider the incredible growth in new housing of light timber frame construction which is then finished in plaster to emulate concrete construction! With contemporary concrete construction systems there's now no reason why people can't have the `real thing' for a similar cost _ but with the unique sound insulation, thermal mass and aesthetic benefits concrete can offer."

Concrete homes aren't new to New Zealand although today only a small percentage of new homes are substantially constructed in this medium, and these homes tend to originate from a very small number of design practices. "These practices have had to make the deliberate effort to establish their own competency in working with concrete. to grasp the design principles and importantly to build their own networks of engineers and others who can support the execution of their designs," says Grant. "The Cement Your Ideas in Concrete programme offers participating design practices a fast track to establishing their own competencies in concrete home design and construction."

A complete solution for designers

Development of the Cement Your Ideas in Concrete programme has taken quite a while. To avoid launching "just another marketing programme" C&CA researched designer and consumer attitudes to the use of concrete in home construction. A "draft" programme was developed from this research, which was in turn modified to reflect feedback from designers and materials and systems suppliers involved in "pre-testing".

"Cement Your Ideas in Concrete is much more than a marketing campaign or promotion. It's a programme of information and support for home designers that extends well beyond a simple launch date. Participating design practices will have direct access to the C&CA, as a resource for answering questions and solving problems."

How the programme works

For home design practices wishing to take part in the Cement Your Ideas in Concrete programme there are two important points to remember. Firstly, it's free, and secondly, to take part a design practice must register. Registration will put architects on the programme database and will ensure that they receive all the information and support materials the programme offers. "We've already established a start-up database of architectural designers, but registration is important as we only really want to set up a dialogue with designers who are active or who plan to be active in home design. Registration is also important because there will be architectural designers out there who we haven't got on our start-up database. We'll be mailing out a registration pack to practices on the database we have, we're also placing ads in industry publications inviting designers to register over the phone," says Grant Thomas.

Once registered, designers will receive a concrete homes resource kit. The kit is the heart of the programme and contains a number of specialist brochures and booklets _ including design principles, the different construction systems and "sell-in" booklets for clients.

Possibly the most valuable aspect of the programme though will be the direct on-going access to C&CA for technical and other informational support. "The C&CA sits independently as one of the hubs of the cement and concrete industry," explains Grant Thomas. "If a designer has a question we'll either answer it directly ourselves, or find the answer from the most appropriate third party. One of the key elements is being able to put architectural designers in touch with engineers and contractors who have experience and expertise in concrete housing. We have established a database to facilitate this process and would encourage interested engineers to contact us."
