New Zealand Engineering 1998 MarchCompany profile
A division of Metal Manufacturers Limited, which in turn is owned by one of the world's foremost cable manufacturers, BICC plc of the UK, MM Cables brings the benefits of the R & D capability of a large international group with an intimate understanding of the New Zealand markets' needs. MM Cables produces virtually every conceivable type of cable at its seven hectare manufacturing site in Riccarton, Christchurch where it employs 370 people. The primary users of the cable include telephone networks, government corporations, universities, and the computer, defence, mining, power utility, rail and petrochemical industries. The company is the exclusive supplier of optical fibre and copper communication cable for use in telecommunications, electronics and data transmission. It is also the largest manufacturer of a comprehensive range of energy cable, from high volume TPS building cable and conduits through to 33 kV cables. In addition to its cable-manufacturing capabilities, MM Cables supplies related products and design and testing services to provide a complete cable and accessories package for instrumentation, communications, data energy systems. It is also a significant exporter of cable. The company's commitment to quality is underlined by the fact it was just the fifth company in New Zealand to be ISO accredited in 1991. MM Cables also has Underwriters Laboratory Accreditation. MM Cables blows away fibre installation blues MM Cables has the answer to the problem of ballooning fibre-optic voice and data transfer requirements. Historically, providing sufficient capacity meant the expensive and time-consuming task of getting into vertical shafts and ceilings or, worse, over-anticipating demand prior to installation. MM Cables' solution - the Blolite system - uses low friction anti-static plastic microducting along the projected fibre path. Compressed air is then used to "blow" the fibre along the 5 mm or 8 mm tubes. When voice and data requirements increase, more fibre can simply be blown along the same path. Fibres may be blown up to 1,000 metres horizontally or 300 metres vertically and around bends with a radius as little as 25 mm. Up to eight fibres may be blown through each tube. For greater capacity demands, MM Cables also offers multiduct clusters, each with an eight strand capacity. MM Cables General Manager Bryan Preston says Blolite is the "way of the future. Fibre costs have been dropping for some time. Add to this Blolite's simple and efficient installation, its low-cost maintenance and the ability to add additional capacity when you require it and, clearly, Blolite's time has come." For organisations requiring copper alongside fibre, MM Cables also produces BloTwist - a twin tube providing space for both fibre and Category 5 twisted pair. Since its New Zealand launch in July 1997, Blolite has been installed by organisations as diverse as Canterbury University and Auckland's Coopers & Lybrand building. It has also undergone extensive testing by Clear Communications. all material supplied by MM Cables |
