Location = Auckland

Name of Event:
Business Sustainability and Environmental Management

Description:

Who is the course aimed at?

We are specifically aiming the public course at the practitioner. This is the person who needs to design and operate the environmental management system. It may be the Quality Manager, or person with responsibility for quality, health and safety and the environment, in a large organisation, or the Managing Director of a small company.

We can also provide in-house courses customised to meet organisations’ needs. This can include a cross-section of the organisation from practitioner to senior management and board members.

What can someone attending the course expect?

The two-day course will help attendees become familiar with how to understand and apply environmental management systems. The course is based around the internationally recognised standard ISO 14001. Attendees with be taught the requirements and intent of the standard and be given opportunity to apply their learning to build their own environmental management system.
The form the course will take is a mix of discussion and interactive group exercises. Some pre-course work, collecting data about their organisation, will give participants an advantage in getting the best from the course when they prepare their own environmental management system.

Why 14001?

The ISO 14001 standard is the most accepted and universally recognised standard internationally for environmental management. Over 155,000 ISO 14001 certificates in 148 countries existed in 2007. Globally some industry sectors require businesses to comply with ISO 14001; for example, oil refineries worldwide must comply in order to operate. Even if organisations do not need to comply with ISO 14001 there are significant benefits to using the standard. For example, a reduction in the use of raw materials and energy will lower operating costs. A reduction in the generation of waste may also reduce costs. The cost of waste disposal will increase dramatically in future. The impacts of climate change, greenhouse gas emissions and global agreements post-Kyoto and -Copenhagen will affect future legislation – and consequently all organisations. Taking a pro-active approach now to environmental management will ensure an organisation is best positioned to handle these legislative changes in their own timeframe.
