| 11 June 2007 IPENZ President Tours South Island Branches The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) President Jeff Jones will tour IPENZ branches in the South Island this week. Dr Jones will visit the Southland, Otago, Canterbury and South Canterbury branches to discuss how engineers can raise community awareness and understanding on national issues such as climate change and energy. “New Zealand is at a cross road of choices”, says Dr Jones. “We must now make informed decisions about how we will contribute to the national effort to reduce our energy requirements and role model a carbon neutral society to the world. But to do that, we must make ourselves educated not only for our sakes but for the sakes of our children’s children”. “Engineers make significant contributions to the decision making process on these issues as well as the implementation. It’s my hope that in encouraging engineers to inform their communities that their communities may gain a better understanding of the issues and of engineering also”. Dr Jones began his one year tenure as IPENZ President in March 2007. He recently retired after 17 years as Chief Executive of Environment BOP, the regional authority for the Bay of Plenty region, and now lives with his wife in Nelson.
