| 21 September 2007 Partnerships strengthening engineering excellence The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) will launch its Professional Development Partner (PDP) programme on Tuesday, 02 October 2007 in Wellington. The PDP programme replaces the current IPENZ Endorsed Employer Programme, which will be phased out over the next 12 months. IPENZ Professional Development Manager Paul Gardner says that “through the PDP programme, IPENZ aims to support employers to provide a comprehensive and structured programme of professional development for their engineering staff. The old Endorsed Employer programme was focused on the initial development of graduate professional engineers. However, in line with our recent initiative to open current competence registers for engineering technicians (Certified Engineering Technician – CertETn) and technologists (Engineering Technology Practitioner – ETPract), and in recognition of the importance of lifelong learning, the new PDP programme aims to ensure support is provided to all members of the engineering team at all career stages”. “The PDP programme seeks to build a community of organisations committed to the professional development of engineers”, says Mr Gardner. “In times of sustained demand for engineering talent, the PDP programme provides an important tool to attract, engage and retain engineers. It is our hope the programme will contribute to business success through sustaining both professional and organizational success and to building the quality of engineering human capital. It also provides IPENZ with a mechanism to indicate to engineering graduates, and engineers generally, those companies that have demonstrated a commitment to the professional development of their engineering team”. IPENZ will lead the initiative by providing co-ordination, leadership and guidance. Partners are responsible for designing, managing and maintaining the programme within their respective organisations. Organisations that employ engineers can apply to become a PDP from 02 October 2007.
