Vision 20/20 – IPENZ Convention 2006

1 February 2006

“Vision 20/20” and planning for the future is the overall theme for the annual Institution of Professional Engineers, New Zealand (IPENZ) Convention 2006. The convention focuses on the impact of engineering decisions and brings together industry leaders to discuss what New Zealand will be like in the year 2020.

The annual convention, to be held at the Duxton Hotel in Wellington on 22–23 March 2006, is a major engineering networking event organised by IPENZ. Convention 2006 will be opened by Kerry Prendergast, Mayor of Wellington, who supports engineering and recognises the importance of the profession in creating innovation.

Day one of Convention 2006 will feature forward-thinking and thought-provoking speakers who will share their insights and extensive industry knowledge. The impressive line-up includes keynote speakers Adrian Orr from the Reserve Bank, parliamentary commissioner for the environment Morgan Williams, Rick van Barneveld from Transit New Zealand and Allan Gammon from BP.

In the evening, members of IPENZ will be recognised for their engineering achievements at the Fellows’ and Achievers Dinner, sponsored by Genesis Energy Ltd.

Day two will feature the technical sessions covering a broad range of topics including the challenges faced in civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, bio-medical and process engineering sectors.

The future of engineering’s inclusiveness will be discussed at the Women in Engineering workshop. Barbera Bucket, senior law practitioner, is widely acknowledged as a leading interpreter of employment law. She will assess the ways in which the legal profession has tackled gender issues and open the debate the changes in the engineering sector approach.

“The future of New Zealand is in the hands of engineers.  We don’t know what the future holds but as we head towards 2020 our country will see significant changes. Forward thinking and planning for tomorrow is crucial to our economic and social prosperity,” said Charles Willmot, IPENZ Director – Engineering.
