First Woman to Head Engineering at NZ University
Wednesday, 10 August 2005

IPENZ Fellow Associate Professor Janis Swan has been appointed Associate Dean of Engineering at the University of Waikato. Her appointment is a first for a woman heading the development of engineering studies at a New Zealand University. She says she is looking forward to continuing the excellence in Engineering education that has developed at the university.

“Waikato’s engineering programmes focus on modern, progressive disciplines with strong relevance to New Zealand industry ” says Associate Professor Swan “I look forward to building on the quality and excellence of these programmes offered at the university, and in offering students from the region the opportunity to do engineering.” There will be an open day in October, to show high school students what ‘Waikato Engineering’ involves. Closer links are being developed with the other tertiary engineering initiatives in the region.

Associate Professor Swan has a long career as a researcher, initially with the meat industry and then more widely. Earlier this year she was elected a Fellow of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand, which recognised her achievements and contributions to the profession.

Associate Professor Swan’s research interests lie in developing processes that add value to biological products, functional properties of meat used in manufacturing, factors affecting meat product yield and quality, extracting high-value biochemicals from animal glands, and product development of foods for niche markets.

She joined the university in 1997 as Chairperson of the Materials and Process Engineering Department, and has played a significant part in the developing materials and process engineering education in the School of Science and Engineering, and was responsible for introducing the Bachelor of Engineering degree.
