News | Archives Environment Bay of Plenty Chief Executive, Jeff Jones has been elected the Vice President of the Institution of Professional Engineers (IPENZ) Board. He brings to IPENZ his business acumen with local government, and his professional engineering expertise in resource management and climate change issues for local communities. Jeff lives in Whakatane on the Bay of Plenty coast, and has been the chief executive of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council since its inception in 1989. He sees his experience in the local government sector as pivotal to his role at IPENZ. “Local government has been, and will continue to be, a significant client for members of IPENZ either in a direct employment or consultant relationship,” he said. Jeff is also the Bay of Plenty Regional Controller of Civil Defence/Emergency Management, and believes his years as a civil engineer, working in the field of natural resource engineering, together with his later role as a chief executive should empower him to both promote and serve the engineering profession as a whole. “New Zealand needs suitably trained and experienced engineers to address climate change issues as damage from natural hazards is likely to increase both from the rising frequency of occurrence, and escalating value of the assets at risk. “The climate change scenario will pose some real issues for the profession as our communities continue to look towards us, the engineers, for pragmatic and cost effective solutions both locally and internationally,” he said. Jeff aims to continue the work of previous IPENZ Boards in raising the profile of engineers as a trusted profession who have a significant role to play in advancing New Zealand economically, socially, environmentally and culturally, while maintaining their role internationally.
