Tsunami in the West Coast a Possibility
Tuesday, 19 July 2005

Most people who live on the West Coast don’t believe they will ever face a Tsunami in their region – but think again says Tsunami expert Dr James Goff.

Dr Goff will be in Greymouth to speak to the public on the devastation in the Indian Ocean from the Boxing Day Tsunami, and discuss what effect Tsunamis may have on the West Coast region.

He has been invited to speak to the public by the West Coast Branch of the Institution of Professional Engineers (IPENZ) next week: Friday, 29 July 2005 at 3.00pm at the West Coast Regional Council, 388 Main South Road, Greymouth.

“The question is why does the West Coast have evidence of Tsunami? When there is an episode in South America such as an earthquake in Peru or Chile it generally creates a Tsunami on the East Coast – which makes those living on the West Coast feel protected. But there is more to the Tsunami threat than just South America” he said.

“What is so fascinating about the West Coast is that we have discovered multiple Tsunami deposits from an early historic one right the way through to some really old prehistoric ones” said Dr Goff.

“During my discussion I will update our understanding of Tsunami on the West Coast, share my concerns, and raise some questions about the implications for the area,” he said.

Speaker:
Dr James Goff is a senior scientist at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Ltd (NIWA) based in Christchurch.
