News | Archives Massey University and the University of Canterbury are collaborating to deliver a new work-based postgraduate certificate developed for the Information and Communications Technology sector from February 2006. The intended outcome is for participants to attain a higher level of professional competence earlier in their careers. The Certificate combines both technical and management topics and may be studied part time over two years while working. An initial self assessment will identify participants’ greatest areas of need and levels of knowledge and skills. This Certificate is the result of research conducted in the sector to identify the skill gaps of engineers and ICT professionals. Industry has provided feedback on the proposed content to ensure that it meets their needs. Funding for its development was awarded by the Tertiary Education Commission to a consortium facilitated by the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand. The consortium is made up of relevant industry associations, representatives from major ICT enterprises and Tertiary Education Organisations. Under the Government’s Growth and Innovation Framework, the ICT sector was identified as having the potential to contribute significantly to New Zealand’s economic growth. Further education and training to lift capability is one of the key factors to realise this potential.
