Local Government Engineer Anthony Wilson wins IPENZ Award
IPENZ Supreme Technical Awards for Engineering Achievers
March 2005

Anthony Wilson, a Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers (IPENZ) and General Manager, Community Assets, New Plymouth District Council has won the Utilities and Networks category of the 2005 IPENZ Supreme Technical Awards for Engineering Achievers, sponsored by Opus International Consultants.

This award was presented to Anthony Wilson at the IPENZ Awards Dinner held at Auckland’s Ellerslie Convention Centre, on Thursday, 17 March 2005.

Anthony Wilson has been a Local Government Engineer in New Plymouth continuously since August 1983. In that time he has made some notable contributions to the advancement of the profession.

Anthony has established the model and mechanism for developing a national approach to asset management, one of the principal tools used by organisations to manage their infrastructure. He was involved in a leadership role with the National Pipeline Asset Management project, which developed a single software solution for advanced asset management for the water and wastewater industry.

He has been instrumental in the establishment of the New Zealand Water and Wastes Association, and, as President, developed it from an association based on voluntary effort to a professionally staffed organisation. It is now one of the few professional organisations which continue to grow both in numbers and diversity.

Anthony conceived a diverse range of projects to assist in developing the institutional capacity of New Zealand’s local authorities, many of which are small and lack technical specialists, and Is a recognized authority on New Zealand’s institutional arrangements for the water sector. He convened the national ‘Crossroads’ conferences designed to identify the need for water reform in New Zealand and to facilitate this reform.

“The Supreme Technical Awards for Engineering Achievers are biennial awards that recognise those who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in engineering practice over their career to the benefit of the Engineering Profession,” said IPENZ Chief Executive, Andrew Cleland.

“IPENZ is privileged to recognise the technical and professional achievements that Anthony has attained as a member of the engineering professor over the years,” he said.

Category
This category includes the engineering including design, construction and operation of all forms of infrastructure and utilities. It includes water, waste, energy and communication services, and the non-electrical elements of electricity generation and transmission.
