| Media Release NZ leading expert on energy issues wins IPENZ Award Bryan Leyland a Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers (IPENZ) and electrical and mechanical consulting engineer has won the Electrical and Systems category of the 2005 IPENZ Supreme Technical Awards for Engineering Achievers, sponsored by Opus International Consultants. Bryan has extensive experience in electric power generation and power systems, and is a recognised expert on all aspects of design, construction and operation of small hydro schemes. He has a detailed knowledge of the mechanical aspects of thermal and hydro power plant and a comprehensive understanding of the problems associated with designing and constructing powerhouses, dams, spillways, canals, intake structures, and penstocks. Since 1992, Bryan has been responsible for the preparation of the biannual review of electricity supply and demand in New Zealand; often publicly expressing his opinions on the adequacy of proposed new generation to meet projected electricity requirements or the means of efficiently transmitting energy around the country. “The Supreme Technical Awards for Engineering Achievers are biennial awards that recognise those who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in engineering practice over their career to the benefit of the Engineering Profession,” said IPENZ Chief Executive, Andrew Cleland. “IPENZ is privileged to recognise the technical and professional achievements that Tim has attained as a member of the engineering professor over the years,” he said.
