John Gleadow elected Fellow of IPENZ
March 2005

John Gleadow, Senior Advisor Transmission for the Electricity Commission of New Zealand, was elected a Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) for his contribution to the advancement of engineering practice; specifically recognising his contributions to development of High Voltage Direct Current transmission systems.

The inter-island HVDC link is a project high on technical risk, but through his technical leadership many difficult issues in upgrading it were effectively resolved. His expertise was recognised by selection to represent Australasia on an international study committee set up to investigate and report on design and operation of HVDC transmission technologies. His expertise is now being called upon by the Electricity Commission.

“Becoming a Fellow is an honour bestowed by ones professional peers on high-achievers who have made a difference to the engineering profession. More often than not a Fellows contribution to the profession also benefits New Zealand as a whole, as the work of engineers’ impacts on New Zealand society,” said IPENZ Chief Executive, Andrew Cleland.
