Michael Breckon elected Fellow of IPENZ
Monday, 28 March 2004

Michael Breckon, Director of Power & Energy International, Maunsell Limited, was elected a Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) for his contribution to the advancement of engineering practice; specifically recognising his contributions to the development of electricity transmission and distribution systems.

Currently Michael is leading Maunsell’s rebuilding work of Afghanistan’s power infrastructure. Since first being invited by the World Bank to assess the country’s power system in 2002 Michael ands is team have been instrumental in assisting Afghanistan’s Ministry of Water and Power to rebuild their transmission and distribution system in Kabul, and a number of other provincial capitals throughout the country.

Many of his recent projects have been overseas, funded by international agencies that have recognised he is a leading practitioner able to develop systems that are technically sound but responsive to local conditions and needs.

His work is characterised by a human touch – he has long contributed to mentoring and competence assessment within New Zealand, and when overseas he seeks to contribute to the development of local engineering expertise.

“Becoming a Fellow is an honour bestowed by ones professional peers on high-achievers who have made a difference to the engineering profession. More often than not a Fellows contribution to the profession also benefits New Zealand as a whole, as the work of engineers’ impacts on New Zealand society,” said IPENZ Chief Executive, Andrew Cleland.

Michael was presented with his Fellowship at the IPENZ Awards Dinner held at Auckland’s Ellerslie Convention Centre, on Thursday, 17 March 2005.
