Professor Richard Archer elected Fellow of IPENZ
March 2004

Professor Richard Archer, Head of the Institute of Technology and Engineering, Massey University, Palmerston North Campus, will be elected a Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) for his contribution to innovation in the design of technological products; specifically recognising his contributions to product, process and new business development in the dairy industry.

Richard’s inventiveness has led to a large number of confidential product and process improvements that have increased revenue streams and cut costs in dairy processing. His work is truly multi-disciplinary. The products to which he has contributed include consumer products, pharmaceuticals, and food ingredients

His career including time in the Dairy Research Institute as a senior research team manager, as Technical Manager in the Lactose Company, and in Kiwitech (later Fonterratech) has been characterised by a commitment to innovation and process improvement.

One of his earliest achievements as a young academic was researching, developing and commissioning the drying and extraction technologies that were use by most of the New Zealand deer industry to process velvet at it transformed and grew from a small hunting base to becoming the substantial farm-based export industry it is today.

“Becoming a Fellow is an honour bestowed by ones professional peers on high-achievers who have made a difference to the engineering profession. More often than not a Fellows contribution to the profession also benefits New Zealand as a whole, as the work of engineers’ impacts on New Zealand society,” said IPENZ Chief Executive, Andrew Cleland.

Richard was presented with his Fellowship at the IPENZ Awards Dinner held at Auckland’s Ellerslie Convention Centre, on Thursday, 17 March 2005.
