| Media Release IPENZ Promotes Gretchen Kivell to Distinguished
Fellow Gretchen Kivell, Head of Hall, Toroa International House, University of Otago, was promoted to the class of Distinguished Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ), for her eminent contribution to the development of the Institution and leadership in the profession of Engineering. Gretchen has been a leader and role model for women in the profession, and has had an exemplary career as a Professional Engineer, manager, academic, and in governance in the public and private sectors. Gretchen’s early career was spent working in chemical production plants in the United Kingdom and New Zealand. After a period in management she joined Unitec Institute of Technology, initially as Head of Department for business computing and ultimately as Director of Education Services. In 1995 she received a Fulbright grant to study the effective management of technology in tertiary institutions. Throughout her career she has demonstrated very high standards of technical competence, management ethics and leadership and has inspired women to excel in the engineering profession. Her leadership capabilities are evidenced by the significant roles she has fulfilled as President, IPENZ (1998) – the first woman to fill the role; Member of the Land Transport Safety Authority (1999–2004); Member of the Council of International Accreditation New Zealand (1996 2000); Council Member of the Centre for Advanced Engineering (2000–2003) and Independent Director, Worley Group Ltd (1994–1997). “Distinguished Fellowships are given to those Fellows who are identified by their peers for their outstanding work and eminent contribution in engineering, technology, science or otherwise,” said IPENZ Chief Executive, Andrew Cleland.
