IPENZ Promotes John Blakeley to Distinguished Fellow

John Blakeley, Research Fellow School of the Built Environment Unitec New Zealand, has been promoted to the class of Distinguished Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ), for his eminent contribution to leadership in the profession of Engineering.

John has served the Institution in a position of leadership as Vice-President, President, and Past President in a career where Engineering has always been his number one priority. These issues apart, it is his efforts in bringing Engineering to the wider community which mark his career as outstanding.

He has had a range of roles as Director of the Applied Research Office at the University of Auckland and then as Executive Director of the Centre for Advanced Engineering and the Director of Canterprise at the University of Canterbury. Through this period John has continued to write and publish articles in the Christchurch Press, the Dominion, and the New Zealand Herald on energy, electricity, and the environment.

These articles have bought difficult technical issues and relevance of Engineering and Technology applications to the New Zealand public, raising the status and awareness of Engineering throughout the country.

“Distinguished Fellowships are given to those Fellows who are identified by their peers for their outstanding work and eminent contribution in engineering, technology, science or otherwise,” said IPENZ Chief Executive, Andrew Cleland.

John was presented with the Distinguished Fellowship at the IPENZ Awards Dinner held at Auckland’s Ellerslie Convention Centre, on Thursday, 17 March 2005.
