Wairarapa Tour combines fun with technical visits
Monday, 19 July 2004

The IPENZ National Engineering Heritage Committee has organised a sight seeing tour for Sunday 1 August, as one of the social activities planned during the joint IPENZ/DOC National Historic Heritage Workshop to be held next month.

The Wairarapa tour leaves Wellington Railway Station at 9:55am arriving back in Wellington at at 6:30pm. Passengers will travel in a reserved carriage to Masterton. Tranzit Coachlines has then arranged to take passengers the short distance to the Fell Museum in Featherstone for morning tea, followed by wine tasting and lunch in the Old Winery Café in Martinborough.

The technical side of the tour departs from the café at 1:30pm. Visits include the Hau Nui Wind Farm with an explanation of the project, a visit to the Lake Wairarapa barrage for viewing and an explanation of the Lower Valley Flood Control Scheme. There is also a provisional plan to visit an alpaca farm plus the West Wairarapa fault line at Tauherenikau Gorge.

The tour will return to Featherstone and depart there at 5:35pm in a reserved carriage on the scheduled train to Wellington.
