Trips and parking surveys crucial to land development
Thursday, 2 September 2004

Determining the expected traffic movements and parking demands associated with land development is a crucial phase of the planning and design of every building – from mega-centres and supermarkets, to church halls and sports centres.

The New Zealand Trips and Parking Database Bureau (TPDB) want to make this process simpler for transport planners and engineers by ensuring survey results from around New Zealand are stored on their database and are shared with its members.

Chief Researcher for the TPDB, Don McKenzie, and Administrator Malcolm Douglass, both from Christchurch, hope to double the database of survey information, and get new trip generation and parking demand survey information for a wider variety of land uses, as well as attracting new Bureau members to improve the sharing of information.

“The database is an important starting point for transportation professionals involved in the development of trip generation and demand parking estimates across all travel modes, and from there assessing the effects of proposed activities on the transportation network. We hope we can attract more members and more survey data, so that we can then share this information with others, instead of having to commission new surveys each time. This way it saves time and funding,” said Don McKenzie.

Don McKenzie and Malcolm Douglass will be speaking at the IPENZ Transportation Group’s Traffic Management Workshop and Technical Conference being held in Wellington on September 5 – 8 September in the hopes of attracting more support from within the transportation engineering profession.

The Bureau is also holding its Annual Meeting at 5.30pm on Tuesday 7th September as part of the Traffic Management Workshop.

The TPDB is a self-funding co-operative launched in 2002, and is an incorporated society under the umbrella of the IPENZ Transportation Group. Currently there are over 30 members drawn from Regional, City and District Councils, and transportation consultancies from around New Zealand.
