What keeps society moving now, and 20 years from now?
Answer: Traffic engineers and transportation planners
Tuesday, 31August 2004

If you have merged like a zip, driven through a roundabout with ease, cycled to work unscathed, or waved cheerily to your children as they walk to school you probably haven’t given a thought for the traffic professionals, who have helped to make our towns and cities more livable.

Larry Cameron, Central Branch Chairman of the IPENZ Transportation Group, a technical group of The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ), says ease of movement is something taken for granted by most New Zealanders. We expect to be able to travel safely and to arrive somewhere without excessive delays, we expect to ring for an ambulance and it will arrive quickly, and we expect businesses to be able to get their products distributed cheaply and on time.

“But the transportation environment may change in 20 years time. Roads may be more congested, parking even harder to find and an increasing older population unable to drive. If the transport network isn’t planned properly now, allowing for a wide range of travel modes, certain sections of society could be disadvantaged in the future,” said Larry Cameron.

At the IPENZ Transportation Group Annual Traffic Management Workshop and Technical Conference to be held in Wellington on September 5 – 8, members will discuss current and future traffic problems and trends, government policies and new initiatives, and how to manage them sustainably within the New Zealand traffic environment,” he said.

“The IPENZ Transportation Group covers land-based transportation. While some of our members are involved in planning for more infrastructure, others are involved in getting as much efficiency out of the existing network as possible, from both an operational and safety point of view. Transportation is also about moving people as well as freight, and about managing all traffic activity, such as trains, trucks and cars through to cyclists and pedestrians,” said Larry Cameron.

“The Transportation Group has made various submissions on transport legislation and policy. Over the past three years, submissions have included the Local Government Act, Parking Standards for NZ, LTSA Rules for Traffic Control Devices, for Road Users, for Setting Speed Limits and for Vehicle Dimensions and Mass, and many more.

“Transportation issues are complex with technical, social and economic influences. We want local and government decision-makers to recognise and use our members’ expertise more often, particularly at the early stages of developing transport policy and legislation rather than only providing comment at later stages.
