NZ needs more power generation – and fast, says new study
Thursday, 19 August 2004

Bryan Leyland released his study at the IEE Sustainable Energy Forum at Auckland University Thursday 19 August 2004.

New Zealanders and the government should take note of a study just released by energy expert Bryan Leyland. He predicts the country will need about 6400 MW of new generation by 2025 – much more than is currently predicted, says the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ).

Bryan Leyland’s study shows that the actual load, and load growth in the New Zealand power system are well above the official estimates. The fact there has been serious underestimates of load and load growth reinforces the already urgent need to review our sources of energy, and for more planning to ensure that we get a generation and transmission system that will provide a reliable supply at the lowest cost. If we don’t, the study says New Zealanders will have continued electricity shortages and higher prices.

“Bryan, an IPENZ member, is New Zealand’s leading expert of energy issues and modeling with a track record of accuracy. If he is right on this occasion then New Zealand needs to make significant decisions on new generation,” said John Gardiner, Deputy Chief Executive, IPENZ Engineers New Zealand.

“This new study reveals the gap between what we’ve got and what we will need is a great deal narrower. He says New Zealand needs to average 320 MW of new generation every year, well above the 130-150 MW pa that has been achieved over the last few years. If demand grows faster than expected then there will be shortages, and days like the 17th August where we only just coped with demand, are an example of New Zealand unexpectedly reaching record levels of power capacity,” said Mr Gardiner.

The study explains why only a small part of the needed 6400 MW can be provided by renewables such as wind, geothermal and small hydro.
