Canterbury and Otago engineers urged to become business leaders
Thursday, 16 September 2004
The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) President,
Dr Ian Parton, is in Christchurch and Dunedin to urge local engineers
to take up leadership roles in the boardrooms and senior management positions.
“We must shed the ‘experts working in isolation’ stereotype
and assume leadership roles. Engineers have a key role in developing national
prosperity, and should be more involved in business governance and on
company boards,” says Dr Parton.
Christchurch
Ian Parton and Andrew Cleland are in Christchurch Wednesday, 29 September
to meet IPENZ Canterbury Branch members at the Canterbury University,
School of Engineering, Lecture Theatre E5 at 5.45pm. He will also use
this opportunity to present local engineer Tony Francis with his Fellowship
Award.
Dunedin
They will then travel to Dunedin on Thursday, 30 September meeting with
the Otago Branch IPENZ members at 6.30pm (social gathering) at Skeggs
Gallery, Municipal Chambers followed by the Presidents address at 7.10pm.
Experience
Dr Parton can speak from experience - he is Chairman of international
engineering consultancy Maunsell’s New Zealand operations, is Deputy
Chairman of Watercare Services Ltd and has served on a number of public
and private sector boards. He has also distinguished himself as a professional
engineer.
“Engineers stand at the forefront in integrating new and emerging
technologies to improve infrastructure and health, welfare and safety.
Society requires people who understand the complexity of emerging technologies
and can formulate and direct implementation of programmes and policies,”
said Dr Parton.
