News | Archives IPENZ President, Dr Ian Parton, (right), starts his tour of the Central North Island branch offices in New Plymouth on Monday, (June 28) hoping to encourage and inspire engineers to pursue leadership roles in New Zealand’s boardrooms and in senior management positions. “Engineers have a key role in developing national prosperity, and should be more involved in business governance and on company boards,” he says. Dr Parton can speak from experience - he is Chairman of international engineering consultancy Maunsell’s New Zealand operations, is Deputy Chairman of Watercare Services Ltd and has served on a number of public and private sector boards. He has also distinguished himself as a professional engineer. Dr Parton is meeting with IPENZ members throughout New Zealand to give his ‘Engineers as Leaders’ message. “We must shed the ‘experts working in isolation’ stereotype and assume leadership roles. “Engineers stand at the forefront in integrating new and emerging technologies to improve infrastructure and health, welfare and safety. Society requires people who understand the complexity of emerging technologies and can formulate and direct implementation of programmes and policies,” said Dr Parton. IPENZ’s recently released review of “National Policy for Fostering Research, Development, Innovation and Entrepreneurship” (released June 2) found that one major cause of problems in New Zealand was the quality of leadership and management for intellectual property-based businesses. The “Engineers as Leaders” campaign is the IPENZ response
– it represents a commitment by IPENZ to extend its services far
beyond the two first stages of an engineering career (qualification, Dr Parton will outline the justification for the “Engineers as
Leaders” programme, the goals and what individual IPENZ members
can do to participate in and benefit from the new programme. |
