| Media Release NZ Engineers mourn the passing of Dr. William Pickering
It was with extreme sadness that The Institution of Professional Engineers (IPENZ) heard yesterday that the profession lost one of New Zealand’s, and perhaps the worlds, greatest engineers of the twentieth century, when news that Wellington born Dr. William Pickering KBE passed away in the United Stated, aged 93. “We at IPENZ are fortunate to have fond memories of how William 'wowed' us in 2002 at the Wellington Town Hall when we invited him back to New Zealand to give the IPENZ Newnham lecture on the engineering challenges of going to Mars. His lecture illustrated to the public the contribution engineers have made to the world in which we live,” said Deputy Chief Executive John Gardiner. “William Pickering’s contribution to the world is immense, and the name of Pickering will continue to live on through both our annual Pickering Lecture to which William generously lent his name, as well as the honour he bestowed on us agreeing to be the inaugural Patron for our new IPENZ Foundation. “On behalf of the Institution and engineering profession in New Zealand, I offer my condolences to the family,” said Mr Gardiner.
