New membership agreement for IStructE in New Zealand
Monday, 29 November 2004

IStructE (UK) signed a reciprocal membership agreement with the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) recently. The agreement will widen access to membership of both organisations and strengthen ties between the two.

In New Zealand IPENZ is the registration authority which assesses and registers Chartered Professional Engineers (CPEng) who meet the relevant standards of competence under the Chartered Professional Engineers of New Zealand Act (2002).

This agreement is similar to one signed last month between IStructE and the Institution of Engineers Australia.

The IStructE/IPENZ agreement allows:

  • Chartered members of IStructE, who are eligible for CEng registration, to apply for Professional Membership of IPENZ (MIPENZ)
  • IStructE members with CEng registration to submit their qualifications as valid evidence when making an application to register as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng)
  • MIPENZ members resident outside the EU, to apply to become Associates of IStructE (AIStructE)
  • AIStructE members with suitable responsibility and experience to apply to transfer to FIStructE using the same peer review method as current MIStructE to FIStructE transfers
  • MIPENZ, CPEng members to apply to sit the Chartered Membership examination without the necessity of undergoing a Professional Review Interview
  • Graduate members of IStructE or IPENZ to apply for graduate membership of the other organisation

The agreement was signed by IPENZ President Dr Ian Parton and Chief Executive Dr Andrew Cleland on behalf of IStructE by President Professor David Nethercot and Chief Executive Dr Keith Eaton.

Following the signing Professor Nethercot said: “Both IStructE and IPENZ firmly believe that this closer collaboration and mutual recognition of members’ qualifications and experience is extremely important for the gradual globalisation of the profession of structural engineering."

"It will help to ensure that standards are maintained, that professional structural engineers maintain their position and relevance wherever they may be practising, and that public safety can be assured,”he said.
