News | Archives The IPENZ National Heritage Committee will unveil the Lower Karori Dam IPENZ Heritage plaque next month - awarded to mark significant works in New Zealand’s engineering heritage. The Lower Karori Dam was built in the early 1870’s in Karori. It is historically significant as the first water supply dam for Wellington City, replacing supplies from springs. It is also significant as an example of what was considered to be the “best practice” for puddled clay core dams built in Britain at that time. The unveiling of the Lower Karori Dam plaque is scheduled for 11:30am on Monday, 2 August 2004, and has been arranged in conjunction with a local tour of Wellington, as one of the social activities planned during the joint IPENZ/DOC National Historic Heritage Workshop being held at the National Library from Tuesday, 3 August – Thursday, 5 August 2004. This year’s Workshop includes a special focus on Engineering Heritage in New Zealand and Australia and covers most aspects of heritage management. This is a valuable networking opportunity for engineers to meet with heritage agencies and professionals. Contact: ENDS |
