Doug Heffernan elected Fellow of IPENZ
Friday, 26 March 2004

Doug Heffernan, CEO, Mighty River Power Ltd, was elected a Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) for his contribution to innovation in the creation of engineering works and application of engineering or technology in the community; specifically recognising his pioneering role in developing the Benmore to Haywards high voltage link, and his leadership in finding ways of ensuring supply security in New Zealand’s electricity market.

Early in his career Doug quickly became one of New Zealand’s experts on electricity transmission, and a number of nationally significant projects were positively influenced by his knowledge and skills. Doug was able to apply his technical skills with sound strategic and commercial ability to pricing rationalisation vs. supply costs. His leadership ability was quickly recognised during the transition of the electricity supply system from state-owned supplier to market, and he contributed to a number of strategic initiatives aimed at ensuring security of supply and responding to short-term supply crises from time to time.

“Receiving a Fellowship carries substantial prestige. It is not a reward for long service or for advancement in seniority with one’s employer, rather it is recognition by IPENZ of the contribution of outstanding individuals,” said IPENZ Chief Executive, Andrew Cleland.

Doug was presented with his Fellowship at the IPENZ Awards Dinner held in Christchurch at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, on Thursday, 25 March 2004.
