2004 Supreme Technical Awards for Engineering Achievers

The 2004 IPENZ Supreme Technical Awards for Engineering
Achievers, sponsored by Opus International Consultants, are designed to
recognise excellence and innovation in a range of New Zealand engineering
disciplines.
The eight winners and categories are:
Dr Nigel Priestly - Buildings and Structures
(including Geotechnical, Structural, and Building Services Engineering)
This category includes the design and construction of buildings and structures
(including any associated geotechnical, structural, and building services
engineering work).
Paul Sampson – Rotorua District Council
- Infrastructure, Utilities and Transport
This category includes engineering, design, construction and operation
of all forms of infrastructure, utilities and transport. It includes:
road, rail, air and shipping industries as well as water and wastewater
services, and the non-electrical elements of electricity generation and
transmission.
Dr Murray Milner – Telecom
New Zealand - Information and Communications Technology
This category includes engineering, design and manufacture of technologies
associated with the generation and transmission of information. It includes
telecommunication and radio engineering. It covers sectors such as radio
and TV, broad-band data transmission and manufactured products that make
use of information, such as GPS.
Richard Downs-Honey – HighModulus - Manufacturing
and Mechanical
This category includes all forms of mechanical and manufacturing-based
engineering such as the design, manufacture and operation of plant and
equipment, both static and mobile.
Dr Max Kennedy – Industrial Research Ltd
- Chemical, Bioprocess and Food
This includes the engineering design, construction and operation of plant
utilising chemical and bioprocess-based technologies. It includes petrochemical,
primary process, pulp and paper and food industries.
Jim Bradley - MWH New Zealand Ltd - Sustainability
and Clean Technology
This category covers emerging technologies associated with the design
and production of products and services to reduce and minimise the impact
on the environment resulting from human activities.
Professor John Boys – Dept of Electrical
and Computing Engineering, Auckland University
(including Automation, Control and Engineering Management Systems)
This category covers that part of engineering involved in the design,
manufacture and operation of plant, equipment and systems using electrical
engineering. It includes automation and control, and electrical generation,
transmission and utilisation.
William (Bill) Studd - Executive Chairman of
Windsor Engineering Group Ltd – General
(including Business, Engineering Heritage, Risk Management, Education
and Research)
This category is for areas of engineering not covered by the categories
above. It includes business, engineering heritage, risk management, education
and research.
“The Supreme Technical award highlights the leaders of the engineering
profession in New Zealand today. It recognizes professional engineers
who have demonstrated innovation, achievement and technical excellence,”
said IPENZ Deputy Chief Executive, John Gardiner.
The biennial awards were presented at the Awards Dinner, during the IPENZ
Convention at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Christchurch on March 25.
