| Media Release IPENZ Promotes Richard Bentley to Distinguished Fellow Richard Bentley, former CEO and now board member of NGC Holdings Limited (formerly Natural Gas Corporation) was promoted to the class of Distinguished Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) for his outstanding contribution to the development of the natural gas sector, and to corporate and community activities more widely. “Richard is an outstanding example of the kind of engineers who make their mark in a wider national arena, while staying close to their engineering roots,” said IPENZ Deputy Chief Executive, John Gardiner. Richard will be presented with his Distinguished Fellowship at the IPENZ Awards Dinner held in Christchurch at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, on Thursday, 25 March 2004. Citation notes: Richard Bentley is Director or Chairman of a number of important New Zealand organisations, ranging across diverse interests from the gas sector (for example NGC Holdings Ltd), the research sector (for example Crop and Food Research and Medialab South Pacific) through to wider commercial interests (for example Wool Equities Ltd). Community and professional interests also figure significantly in his portfolio; he is, for example, Chairman of the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary Trust in Wellington, is involved with a number of educational institutions, and is a member of the IPENZ Professional Standards Board. His current involvements continue a distinguished career, which began with dual degrees from Canterbury University in civil engineering and economics. His early engineering years were spent in the consulting arena in the UK, but his most influential years were those in the natural gas business. Over a period of over 20 years, he rose through the ranks of Fletcher Challenge, in its various forms, to become CEO of the Natural Gas Corporation. During the same period natural gas developed from a new fuel to a mature part of our energy system, and Richard played a major role in making it happen.
