John Mander elected Fellow of IPENZ
Friday, 26 March 2004

John Mander, Professor of Structural Engineering, University of Canterbury, was elected a Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) for his contribution to the advancement of engineering knowledge; specifically recognising his research leadership in developing pre-cast concrete wall and frame structures with reduced likelihood of damage in severe earthquakes.

John has published widely as a leading structural engineering academic for about 15 years, and brings to his research a strong belief in the need to develop fundamental physical understanding of the processes at work so that design methods can be improved. He does this in such a way that engineering practitioners can easily engage with him and debate the impacts of his research on their practice. He is an active academic in all senses of the word, contributing to development of teaching programmes and wider activities of the University.

“Receiving a Fellowship carries substantial prestige. It is not a reward for long service or for advancement in seniority with one’s employer, rather it is recognition by IPENZ of the contribution of outstanding individuals,” said IPENZ Chief Executive, Andrew Cleland.

John was presented with his Fellowship at the IPENZ Awards Dinner held in Christchurch at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, on Thursday, 25 March 2004.
