IPENZ Environmental Award for excellence and innovation

CH2MBeca Ltd, Fletcher Construction Ltd, Watercare Services Ltd and Manukau City Council project - The Rehabilitation of the Mangere Oxidation Ponds and their return to Manukau Harbour - won The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) 2004 Environmental Award. The Award was sponsored by Shell New Zealand Limited.

The project, the Return of the oxidation ponds to the sea, the restoration of the foreshore area to natural coastline and the improvement to the effluent quality discharged from the treatment plant, has greatly enhanced the environmental quality of the Mangere foreshore. Specific enhancements included the planting of 260,000 native trees and the return of traditional fishing and shell-fishing grounds to local Iwi.

IPENZ Environmental Merit Prize

John Cocks and Paul Russell, MWH New Zealand Ltd received The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) 2004 Environmental Merit prize for the Abel Tasman National Park Sewage Management Project. The Award was sponsored by Shell New Zealand Limited.

John Cocks and Paul Russell developed a sustainable solution for managing human waste and washing water at hut and campsites in the Abel Tasman National Park. Using solar power and state of the art technology, they were able to optimise performance and minimise visual and odour effects.

 

2004 Environmental Award

Representatives received their award at the IPENZ Awards Dinner, during the IPENZ Convention at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Christchurch on Thursday, March 25.

The 2004 Environmental Award recognises engineering work that demonstrates consideration of the environment in its design and the way problems are solved, and which make an overall contribution to the environment and public enjoyment. This award also consists of a brass plaque for the project site recognising the company or organisation undertaking the venture.
