IPENZ Promotes Bob Henare to Distinguished Fellow
Friday, 26 March 2004
Bob Henare, Chairman of Capital and Coast District Health Board was promoted
to the class of Distinguished Fellow of The Institution of Professional
Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) for his leadership in the profession of
engineering, and leadership in the community.
“Bob Henare’s name is a familiar one to Wellingtonians –
he is the Chair of the District Health Board – but many of them
don’t realise that he is a professional engineer, “said IPENZ
Deputy Chief Executive, John Gardiner.
“He is well known for his skill in managing major change in organisations
and indeed whole sectors, and is recognised as one of the leaders of business
in New Zealand. He was made an Officer of the British Empire for his services
to business and to the community,” he said.
Mr Henare will be presented with his Distinguished Fellowship at the IPENZ
Awards Dinner held in Christchurch at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, on Thursday,
25 March 2004.
Citation notes:
After graduating from Auckland University he joined the Railways Corporation
in 1958. His early career embraced various civil engineering roles including
bridge design and operational management. He was promoted to the role
of Chief Civil Engineer in 1979, and was subsequently appointed Deputy
General Manager.
Following the major restructuring of the state organisations in the mid
1980s, Bob found himself a Board member or Chair of a number of the newly-constituted
State Owned Enterprises, including the Coal and Airways Corporations.
As his experience in governance roles grew, Bob found himself being appointed
to similar roles in the Health sector. Bringing the analytical skills
of a professional engineer to these roles, he has made a considerable
contribution to improving the performance of health delivery organisations.
He is also a member of the Mental Health Commission, to which he was appointed
in 1998.
