IPENZ Promotes Associate Professor Alexander Sutherland
to Distinguished Fellow

Associate Professor Alexander Sutherland, long serving Dean of the School
of Engineering at the University of Canterbury, was promoted to the class
of Distinguished Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers New
Zealand (IPENZ), for his development of the Institution and advancement
of technological education.
“Alex has made a major contribution to New Zealand, particularly
in matters to do with the Resource Management Act, where he has been a
member or Chair of twenty resource consent tribunals,” said IPENZ
Deputy Chief Executive, John Gardiner.
“He has had an outstanding career and the strength, quality, and
stability of the School of Engineering at Canterbury is largely attributable
to him. Those of us who have had the good fortune to serve on a committee
with Alex know of his insight, attention to detail, effort, and ready
input of original ideas,” he said.
Alex will be presented with his Distinguished Fellowship at the IPENZ
Awards Dinner held in Christchurch at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, on Thursday,
25 March 2004.
Citation notes:
Alexander James Sutherland completed a BE with First Class Honours in
1961, and an ME in 1962, at the University of Auckland.
He then completed a PhD in 1966 at Caltech, returning to New Zealand in
1967 to a lectureship in Civil Engineering at the University of Canterbury.
He was appointed Dean of Engineering at Canterbury in 1987, and Dean of
Forestry and Engineering in 2004.
Alex has served on or chaired numerous committees concerned with the University
of Canterbury – Professorial Board, NZQA National Academic Qualifications
Standing Committee, Equal Opportunities Working Group, University Council,
New Zealand Universities Academic Audit Unit, Australian Universities
Quality Agency Auditors Panel, Marsden Fund Panel and more – and
committees concerned with the Profession – Chair of Canterbury Branch
of IPENZ, IPENZ Accreditation Panels, the Council of IPENZ and later the
Board, Education Committee of IPENZ, IPENZ Qualifications and education
advisory group, South Island Moderator for IPENZ Professional Review,
IPENZ Competency Assessment Board, to mention but a small sample.
He has also acted as a consultant on important major projects mainly to
do with harbours, outfalls, viaducts, bridges and civil construction works.
Alex was awarded the IPENZ Professional Commitment Award in 1998.
