Benefits of Competence-based IPENZ Memberships

  • Professional Membership (MIPENZ)
Professional Members have demonstrated their competence through an assessment by their peers and are entitled to use the post-nominal MIPENZ as a lifetime mark of professional standing and engagement with the New Zealand engineering profession. MIPENZ is internationally benchmarked.
  • Technical Membership (TIPENZ)
Technical Members have demonstrated their competence through an assessment by their peers and are entitled to use the post-nominal TIPENZ as a lifetime mark of their standing as an engineering technologist and engagement with the New Zealand engineering profession. TIPENZ is internationally benchmarked.
  • Associate Membership (AIPENZ)
Associate Members have demonstrated their competence through an assessment by their peers and are entitled to use the post-nominal AIPENZ as a lifetime mark of their standing as an engineering technician and engagement with the New Zealand engineering profession. AIPENZ is internationally benchmarked.

Benefits of Competence Registers (CPEng, IntPE(NZ))

  1. Recognition of current professional competency and use of the post nominal(s)
By the nature of reassessment, CPEng and IntPE(NZ) registration are both quality marks that indicate current competence. Registrants are entitled to use the postnominals CPEng and/or IntPE(NZ) to signify this current competence.
  2. Enhanced career opportunities
The term “professional engineer” is not restricted in New Zealand, which means that anyone can claim to be a professional engineer. CPEng is a quality mark that assures current competence to users of engineering services. Companies also use CPEng as a quality standard for clients (e.g. on tender documents).
  3. Enhanced employment prospects
CPEng is increasingly being used by New Zealand companies as a benchmark for recruitment and professional development.
  4. International mobility
The IntPE register lists those engineers meeting an international standard with slightly more specific eligibility requirements than CPEng.  When a person on the NZ section of the register seeks registration in another jurisdiction, IntPE(NZ) registration by IPENZ maximises the credit that can be gained (other than by proving competence directly within that jurisdiction).
