Continuing Professional Development

What is CPD?
IPENZ recognises the vital importance of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for its members. CPD plays an important role in assisting engineers to remain current and develop new competencies in engineering practice.

As a practical response towards this, IPENZ has developed its own programme of short courses.

Short courses and workshops

IPENZ offers a range of technical and essential skills courses specifically designed to develop and maintain the competencies of engineers, scientists, technologists and people in engineering-related occupations.

The key features of our CPD Events are:

  • Learning outcomes are linked to CPEng, ETPract and CertETn standards as well as to IPENZ 12 competencies for Professional Engineers, Engineering Technologists and Engineering Technicians
  • Facilitators are well-seasoned professionals in their field of expertise with a long standing relationship with IPENZ and the engineering community of New Zealand
  • Sessions are interactive with group work, case studies, and discussions
  • The aim is to develop and maintain competencies as opposed to participation only
  • A limited number of participants to maximise learning and interactive exercise

In-House courses

IPENZ offers many of its popular public short courses as in-house courses for organisations at any location on agreed dates. All courses are tailored to meet organisational requirements incorporating organisational policies, terminology and procedures as appropriate. They may be customised for the recent entrant to the workplace, the mid career professional or senior professional. Essential skills courses are designed to appeal to the wide spectrum of professionals employed by engineering firms.
The usual services provided by IPENZ for customised, in-house short courses include:

  • Contact by the Professional Development Manager and the facilitator to tailor the standard IPENZ course to particular needs
  • Delivery of the course for up to 20 participants at a venue provided by the organisation
  • Provision of comprehensive course materials to all participants
  • Collation of end-of-course evaluations with results sent to the organisation

Distance learning modules
IPENZ is working in partnership with several universities both in New Zealand and overseas to make available to IPENZ members a range of postgraduate modules by distance learning.
These modules can be studied individually at the participant’s own pace.

Distance learning courses
IPENZ is working in collaboration with a number of distance-learning providers to offer courses in a variety of learning areas across Australia and New Zealand.

Technical courses by expression of interest
Certain courses will be run as and when IPENZ receives sufficient interest. People can register online for these courses and as soon as enough people have registered in an area we will organise the course.

Last but not Least: The CPD survey…

The online continuing professional development (CPD) survey in the Members’ Area provides you with an opportunity to feed back your personal CPD requirements, and helps direct our short course, seminar and conference programmes. The feedback will be analysed on a continuous basis by our Professional Development Team and used to identify gaps in the current CPD programme.

The CPD survey can be found at
