Introduction

IPENZ accredits engineering programmes as meeting internationally benchmarked standards. Through international agreements, IPENZ accredited engineering qualifications are recognised in many other countries thereby giving graduates international portability.

Accredited programmes are listed alphabetically by institution and by specialisation.

• Four year engineering degrees
• Three year engineering technology degrees
• Two year national diplomas in engineering

IPENZ automatically recognises graduates of an accredited programme who completed their studies from a specified year onwards. The first year of recognition is denoted by the date after the programme title.

Where a programme is no longer recognised by IPENZ, the date from which recognition of graduates ceased is denoted by a second date (e.g.1991-1998). This typically relates to programmes that have ceased to be offered by the institution.

After the name of the institution appears a statement regarding the next review of the institution’s engineering programmes. Unless otherwise identified, programmes have full accreditation up to the year of the next review of the institution’s programmes. This covers students admitted to the programme to commence their studies up to and including the first semester of the following year, but not thereafter. Exceptions could be (a) where students have had a substantial break in their studies, during which accreditation of the programme has ceased; or (b) should exceptional circumstances arise, causing IPENZ to terminate accreditation of a programme. All such circumstances would be treated on merit in relation to particular students or groups of students.

Accreditation applies to programmes irrespective of campus unless specifically stated.

Provisional Accreditation

New programmes may be granted provisional accreditation until a representative group of graduates has emerged to enable full accreditation to be considered.

Provisional accreditation indicates that full accreditation is expected, but not guaranteed. Provisional accreditation is granted on the basis of evidence available at the time that full accreditation criteria are capable of being met. The year from which graduates from the programme will be automatically recognised by IPENZ as having a recognised engineering qualification is set at the time that full accreditation is granted. When a programme moves from provisional accreditation to full accreditation, graduates will normally be considered by IPENZ as having a recognised engineering qualification if they graduated whilst the programme was provisionally accredited, i.e. accreditation is normally retrospective.

Provisional accreditation will normally lapse, and graduates will not be automatically recognised by IPENZ if full accreditation is not gained within two years of the first cohort of students graduating from the programme in sufficient numbers to enable a meaningful assessment against the Graduate Competence Profile.
