Introduction

IPENZ Heritage Objectives

IPENZ has an active programme for the identification and promotion of New Zealand’s engineering heritage. The objective of this Heritage Programme is:

To inspire and teach present and future generations about New Zealand's engineering heritage by preserving the legacy of the past through its identification, maintenance and promotion.

Activity Groups

Within this programme are three main activities with associated goals:

1) Identifying and promoting New Zealand's engineering heritage.

  • Identify and register sites, projects, and structures with characteristics and features that make them worthy of being recorded as an important aspect of the nation's engineering heritage.
  • Ensure that photographs, plans and other archival material relevant to engineering heritage are preserved.
  • Maintain a collection of books that document New Zealand's engineering heritage.
  • List and promote collections and museums of items of engineering interest.
  • Promote to the engineering profession the importance of recognising, identifying and recording engineering heritage in their practice of engineering.
  • Promote New Zealand's engineering heritage through written material, published papers and the internet.

2) Recording the biographical details of retired and eminent engineers.

  • Obtain from retired members a biographical record of their careers for access by researchers.
  • Arrange oral history interviews of significant engineers and make the tapes available to researchers and others with an interest in the material.

3) Supporting and co-operating with individuals, organisations and institutions that are documenting, maintaining, educating and disseminating engineering heritage.

  • Develop and promulgate policies and guidelines on engineering heritage and its conservation.
  • Provide political, strategic and operational support to individuals and organisations involved in storing, recording and maintaining engineering heritage.
  • Seek IPENZ representation on bodies dedicated to heritage issues.
  • Assist and advise organisations involved in education and dissemination of engineering heritage knowledge.
  • Maintain liaison with the National Committee on Engineering Heritage of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.

National Engineering Heritage Committee

The National Engineering Heritage Committee (presently based in Wellington) assists with the development of policy for the IPENZ Heritage Programme, as well as providing specialist advice on engineering heritage issues. The committee in turn is assisted by Regional Heritage Chapters located in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin.

Engineering Database and Heritage Register

IPENZ has a web-based National Engineering Heritage Database . This is a repository of information to assist those who want to explore, research and enjoy New Zealand’s engineering heritage. Information in this database has been subject to an initial review by IPENZ to ascertain its general appropriateness.

Closely linked with the Database is a Register. This contains a more comprehensive assessment of selected engineering heritage items. This information has been subject to formal assessment procedures and can be relied upon by researchers as having been validated. It includes information from the IPENZ 1990 Heritage Plaque Programme.
