Stephen Smith


 

Stephen Smith is an academic who teaches and researches within the fields of design, industrial design and industrial heritage. He has extensive knowledge and research of the industrial heritage of Australia with particular reference to steam, its influence on the social, cultural, and industrialisation of the Nation. His background is that of a boilermaker (steam) who served his apprenticeship in the Western Australia Government Midland Railway Workshops, then leaving and pursuing an academic pathway while continuing to be actively engaged in the conservation, restoration and operation of steam heritage within Western Australia. One of his current research interests is the potential impact of losing traditional trade skills, knowledge of materials and working methodologies, in conserving the current and future engineering heritage of the Nation.
