Engineering practice has evolved into different disciplines ever since the separation between military and civil engineering in the early 19th century.  The paper describes the processes involved in the recognition of conservation and heritage engineering as a separate area of practice, both in Australia and overseas, and how such practice differs from “normal” engineering practice. The proposed guideline for registration by the National Engineers Registration Board is appended to the paper.
