Supreme Awards for Engineering Excellence

The IPENZ Supreme Awards for engineering excellence was sponsored by Tranz Rail NZ. The biennial awards that recognised innovation and excellence in engineering project work. The Supreme Awards for Engineering Excellence originally consisted of three categories: Production Technology, Environmental and Structural, however in 1999 these were extended to include Building and Construction, Infrastructure, Utilities and Transport, Information Technology and Networks, Manufacturing, Food and Biosciences and Energy.

In judging the Award, consideration will be given to the contribution the project has made to New Zealand's economic, social and environmental development in the category selected, the use of innovation and new technologies, the creation of a new product or business, and the projects overall efficiency, effectiveness and design

Each award consisted of a trophy and certificate/s.

From 1999-2004 there were eight categories presented biannually:

Electrical Systems (including Automation, Control and Engineering Management Systems)
Multidisciplinary (including Business, Engineering Heritage, Risk Management, Environmental, Education and Research)


Building and Construction Engineering Excellence Award
For work on constructing individual buildings, complexes or structures in or outside New Zealand which involve unusual engineering design and/or construction difficulties or were accomplished using novel engineering techniques.

Infrastructure, Utilities and Transport Engineering Excellence Award
This category includes the engineering, including design, construction and operation of all forms of infrastructure, utilities and transport. It includes road, rail, air and shipping industries as well as water and wastewater services, and the non-electrical elements of electricity generation and transmission which have delivered higher than usual levels of safety, cost-effectiveness and/or environmental friendliness.

Information and Comunication Technology Engineering Excellence Award
For information technology or networking engineering projects in or outside New Zealand which have provided customers with significant improvements in business effectiveness and efficiency at lower than normal cost.

2001 HTC Infrastructure Management Limited for the Implementation of Predictive Modelling for Road Management
2003 David Leong, Michael Byrne, Tonkin & Taylor, for the Integrated Source Management Model for Auckland's Bulk Water Supply System.


Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Excellence Award
For New Zealand electrical, electronic and/or mechanical product or plant engineering projects or designs which have delivered the employer or customer the means to significantly reduce costs or pursue significant new opportunities in the discrete manufacturing or public service sectors.

Food, Bioprocess and Chemical Engineering Excellence Award
For product or plant engineering projects or designs which have delivered the employer or customer the means to significantly reduce costs or pursue new business opportunities in the food anufacturing or timber processing sector.

2001 Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health, Massey University, for the Milk Powder Pilot Plant
2003 Certificate of Merit - Ian Marsden, Heinz Wattie's f or the Raw Process Hub Rehabilitation at Heinz Wattie's Christchurch factory.


Electrical Systems Engineering Excellence Award
For oil or gas extraction, refinement, transport or storage or electricity generation or transmission projects or designs which have improved the efficiency of existing technology, improved safety or environmental friendliness or successfully introduced new technologies to New Zealand.
